A seven-year, $15 million renovation completed in 2024 completely restored the exterior of the Old Charleston Jail. The upper floors now function as a private event space called Twenty-One Magazine.

You can view the exterior and the surrounding grounds at any time for free. Interior access is only allowed during guided evening tours of the unrestored ground floor.

Romanesque Revival Facade

5 minsPhoto op

Architects Barbot & Seyle added this fortress-like exterior in 1855. The building originally stood four stories tall, but the top floor and octagonal tower were removed after the 1886 earthquake. The facade looks imposing at dusk just before your tour begins. Arrive early to take exterior photos while there is still light.

The Former Potter's Field

The building sits on a four-acre parcel designated in 1680 for a hospital, workhouse, and public burial ground. An estimated 10,000 people were buried here before the jail was built. This massive unmarked graveyard contributes heavily to the local haunted lore. Keep in mind that the ground around the building is uneven.
